The first system is the human being. It is a functioning, orderly system: the rhythm of the heart, the breath of the lungs, the flow of the veins, the circuits of the brain… This inner order has also been the source of inspiration for the systems humans have built in the external world. Wheels, presses, algorithms, and machines are mechanisms that reflect the human’s own functioning outward. The world develops through this mutual interaction. Humans create systems; systems reshape humans. Cities rise with the turning of wheels, new languages are born through the working of algorithms, civilizations are built by the power of presses.
